Close run encounter to the final whistle.

Sunderland development squad enjoyed an exciting 27-25win over a veteran Blaydon Bricks team this weekend. The squad continued to show the form they had exhibited in parts in their loss to Gosforth 2nds the previous week. Playing against a much more experienced side, Sunderland opened the scoring in the first ten minutes when fly half Danny Hinder barrelled his way through the Blaydon midfield to score a try from just outside the Blaydon 22. Blaydon responded with a penalty kick but Sunderland extended their lead further after Jamie Backerwraski sprinted over to score from 30 metres out after great offloads from Colin Wallace, Ben Padget and Clayton Walker. Just before halftime Sunderland scored again to take the lead 17-3. Great counter rucking from Kieran Mctiernan and Steven Kilner, allowed second row Robin Watson to pick up the loose ball and run in a try from the half way line. At halftime Blaydon made a host of changes that put Sunderland under great pressure and saw the lead deservedly change to Blaydon, 18-17. Sunderland though began to counter attack through a number of tap penalties and created pressure to enable Hinder to kick a crucial penalty goal to make it 20-17 to Sunderland. A thundering tackle from the Sunderland captain Wallace then saw Walker capitalise to scoop up the ball and score from 30 metres. Blaydon finally scored in the last minute of play but the Sunderland team had secured an excellent win, in which the whole team fully contributed.
