With the firsts and seconds both having games called off due to frozen pitches at Ashbrooke and Houghton,

it was the thirds who took centre stage on Saturday as they smashed Jarrovians 73-7.

The home side were unable to raise a full side so a number of the Sunderland first and second team squad were drafted in to help out Jarrovians but were not able to do anything to stop a rampant third team led by a five try haul for youngster Danny Hinder.

Hinder should have had a try early on but was adjudged not to have grounded the ball. It didn't take Hinder long to get on the scoresheet though as he benefited from some magic in the centres to score the opening try of the day.

The mercurial Micky Simpson was next on the score sheet. Latching onto a rare Stevie Graham pass Simpson ghosted past his opposite man before chipping over the full back to touch down.

Another Stevie Graham break provided ball for John Grainger to work his magic as he fed Hinder for his second try of the day for a 17-0 Sunderland lead.

Directly from the restart Clive Fish set up quick ruck ball allowing Jossie Wright to make a break. Throwing a number of dummies rather than spitting them out as usual Wright was able to make good ground and set up Glenn Jackson who in turn supplied Hinder with the pass that allowed the youngster to score his hat trick.

Sunderland continued to pile on the pressure and Hinder added a fourth try on the half hour.

Jarrow were unable to cope with the powerful running of Stevie Graham in the centres and he was rewarded shortly before half time as he powered through a number of tackles and raced away to score.

There was still time in the half for Sunderland to add a further two scores as John Grainger converted his own try before with the last play of the game Jossie Wright barged over for the final score of the half for a 44-0 half time lead.

Sunderland continued where they left off as Michael Simpson cut back inside from the wing to touch down under the posts.

Clive Fish, having swapped sides to play for Jarrovians at half time was rather harshly sin binned but spirited defence meant Sunderland were unable to capitalise on their numerical advantage.

But with Fish back on the pitch Sunderland went on to extend their lead, first a long run in for Hinder saw him score his fifth try before John Grainger scored his second try of the game.

Peter Groark then got in on the action as he picked from the base of a scrum and sensationally raced 35 yards to touch down. He added his second shortly after following a fine break from Andrew Turnbull.

Groark then went from hero to villain as he was sin binned for not rolling away from the tackle.

Jarrow took advantage of their numerical advantage to add a consolation try but Sunderland were pleased with the final score of 73-7.
