Sunderland drew stiff opposition in the first round of the County Cup, but started well against a side who had beaten them regularly. The Wearsiders were quicjkest out of the blocks and showed some of their development over the last few months to score first. Durham equalised before half time, but the local lads battled on.
In the second period, the Durham boys got their running game going, and as time progressed the Wearsiders found it harder to stay with them.
Nevertheless, there was some creditable play from the Sunderland squad, pleasing to watch, and their effort could not be faulted. Durham ran out 27-7 winners.
