Sunderland survive fightback

In the usual four-seasons-in-one-day weather, quite particular to Consett's own microclimate, the lads plugged away scoring in both the first and final minutes. Shorn of 9 regulars, the 16 turned up, reshuffled and scored immediately from a scrum after Consett's kick hovered in a gale force win and dribbled two metres from half-way. Vinnie picked up at eight, broke the cover defence, kicked ahead to score. Chris Rochelle adding the extras. Thereafter followed tries from a trademark pick and go from David Matloch and Tony Irwin's Australia line-out succeded with Vinnie driving through to score. Consett hit back, but we were in the ascendancy leading 31-7 at one point, with tries from Chris and Zak Kennedy. Then, the lads, flagging, let the home side back in and bizarrely conceeded three tries all direct from kick-offs, as we kept kicking to their abrasive ball carriers, then ushering them through, a la touch rugby. In the dying secons, David - now at number eight - scored at the end from the back of a scrum, after some excellent driving play. Chris adding the extras.
