Sunderland U14s entertained a combined side from West Hartlepool and Hartlepool Rovers in the quarter final of the County Cup at Hill View. This is the first meeting of the two sides since the two Hartlepool sides have combined, after previous encounters with both sides on their own in previous years.
Sunderland started off on the front foot and were rewarded in the opening minutes with a try from Kian Dunn following a number of phases of play from the forwards. Sunderland continued in the ascendancy and got further tries from Lungelo Mkwanazi, Harry Harlow-Stephenson and Daniel Cassap. Daniel Cassap, Harry Harlow-Stephenson and Louie Macari converted the tries to give Sunderland a 28-0 lead at half time.
Sunderland continued where they left off in the second half and sealed passage into the semi-finals with further tries from Sonny Hopper, Aiden Royal, Daniel Cassap and Louie Macari. Conversions from Daniel Cassap and Louie Macari took the final score to 54-0.
Overall, a great victory particularly in keeping a good West Hartlepool/Hartlepool Rovers side scoreless. The score didn't quite justify the competitiveness from the opposition, however the defensive work done by the team was superb and the attack took their opportunities when they arose. Star player was Harry Harlow-Stephenson for his all-round work in the middle of the park.
Sunderland now face Darlington at home in the semi-final of the County Cup on Sunday 5th March.
